A
project management office has become a
strong project driving structure used
today to help business units control their
projects more effectively. The need to
capitalize on one's investments and yield
a healthy ROI has put a strong focus to
deliver projects on time and with in budget.
The lack of structure in an organization
can inhibit a project from running smooth
and cost effectively. A well structured
PMO can help set best practices, resource
management, provide a centralized location
for all project documents and tools, provide
a governing body to help select, deploy,
track and measure projects.
There
are three basic PMO models which include:
1)
An internal consulting division that can
guide, assist and help others manage projects
2) A centralized organization structure
which has project managers and project
coordinators who are assigned to projects.
3) A hybrid of the two models above where
individuals can act as coaches for some
projects and lead a project from larger
scaled, complex projects.
A
PMO should be designed to closely resemble
the organizational culture to ensure a
smooth transition to a PMO division in
your organization.
